Most of the conversations and publicity leading up to NXTcomm08 has been focused on delivering content and services to consumers’ homes, but there has been less discussion about how consumers are to distribute the content around the house. Coaxial cable is fairly common in US households, but it rarely reaches every room in the home and often needs to be extended to the places people want to use the bandwidth. Not too long ago, CAT5 looked like the Holy Grail but uptake of this versatile but delicate cable type has been slow. Fiber has an ideal range and interference immunity but is even more delicate and difficult to install in walls-especially in retrofit applications.
