New Communication Services

Tuesday, June 17 • 10:30 AM - 10:50 AM • South Hall, Room S111

Convergence. Broadband. Over-the-top video. YouTube. These are trends the communications industry has seen coming for some time. Current boardband networks have been able to be stretched, pushed and pulled to accommodate new trends.

But as new, non-traditional applications – with very fast life cycles – spring up and create customer and bandwidth demand, the network will have to evolve to accommodate those applications. Even more importantly, our thinking has to evolve. The industry must embrace Broadband like never before. The trend toward video applications will grow beyond the ability of today's networks to carry them.

With broadband, the overriding questions have not changed from almost a decade ago. What are the trends?  What are the opportunities for new services? How will data networks evolve to deliver these services? What partnerships do carriers need to form in order to achieve customers what they want? Are those partnerships with wholesalers, retailers, content providers, or some other group?

With the implementation of broadband comes new challenges, such as Internet regulation, which threatens our competitiveness by obstructing our investment in broadband. But as an industry we face other challenges, as well. We must decide what technologies need to be in place. We must decide how the data network will be managed.

Jim Hansen, senior vice president of Network Services, will address the impact of new services at what communications companies need to do to enhance the customers’ data experiences to remain competitive in the communications industry.

Speaker

James A. Hansen, Senior Vice President, Network Services, Embarq Corporation

In his position, Hansen is responsible for technology evaluation and development for the company, as well as for the planning, design, engineering, provisioning, operations and performance management. In addition, Hansen oversees the "Circuit to Packet" network conversion and EMBARQ’s capital budget.  Prior to this, Hansen served as senior vice president, Network, for Sprint’s Local Telecommunications Division.

Hansen has held other senior management positions at Sprint, including vice president of Planning for the Local Telecommunications Division. He also led two re-engineering teams and served as a director of National Engineering Standards, Regional Planning and Regional Engineering. Prior to joining Sprint, he held various management positions with Northwestern Bell, AT&T and Procter & Gamble.

Hansen has a bachelor’s degree of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Missouri.
