Building A New NGN Network on IMS Foundations

Join us for this session addressing the architecture components and how they are used in testing and deploying new and existing applications and services. The three layers of IMS play together to provide the best Next Generation Networking (NGN) service control for residential and enterprise unified communications, to support mobility and fixed-mobile convergence and deliver the quality of service for VoIP and IPTV. Panelists panel will also discuss what customers will be looking for and explain how services will need to evolve over the next 3 to 5 years.

Michael Khalilian, Chairman and President, IMS/NGN Forum

Michael Khalilian is Chairman and President of the IMS/NGN Forum (Telecom Service Delivery Association for Triple, Quadruple and M-Play). He also served as CTO, CIO, and Board member to a number of Telecom, Cable and Wireless start-ups such as VoX Communications and Volo Communications and as a Chief Technologist/Advisor to NTT Business Groups and led NGN Products Strategy/Senior Director of Technology, Architecture and Applications Development with Time Warner business groups.

Mr. Khalilian has supported the telecommunications and multimedia industry for over 20 years as one of its most visionary and forward thinking participants through numerous speaking engagements, bylined articles, published books and executive leadership. He was nominated as one of the “Top 100 Voices of IP Communications” in 2006. He is also a member of Standard & Poor’s Society of Industry Leaders in Telecom, founding member of CXO’s group and Collective IQ international leadership advisory board member of NGN Telecom.

Oliver Birch is a senior certified software architect in the communications sector at IBM. He has worked in the telecommunications industry for the last 15 years specializing in the design, development and deployment of complex communication systems, both in the next-generation network and legacy service provider network environments. Prior to this, Birch was the chief architect for software services.

Birch combines a broad understanding of IBM’s software with deep industry skills and has worked closely with many large service provides worldwide to deliver high-performance, highly robust, scalable solutions, using IBM and partner products.

Stephen Hayes is the chairman of the 3GPP systems group (3GPP-SA). The 3GPP-SA group is responsible for all requirements, architectural, system and coordination issues for GSM and WCDMA systems and networks. IMS requirements and architectural issues are decided in 3GPP-SA.

Mr. Hayes is a Principal Engineer at Ericsson and has been extensively involved in GSM and subsequent systems for the past 10 years. He chaired the 3GPP protocols group during the development of IMS and has been instrumental in achieving the cooperation between the standards bodies to gain it's acceptance worldwide. He recently organized a workshop to address requirement alignment issues between leading standards bodies on IMS.

Mr. Hayes has participated and held various leadership positions within the ATIS committees including WTSC (Wireless Technology and Systems Committee). He has written various articles for IEEE communications and holds numerous patents in the area of telecommunications. Mr Hayes received his Bachelors Degree from Texas Christian University in 1977 and his Masters from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1980. Mr. Hayes resides in Flower Mound, Texas. 

Martin Taylor has spent over 20 years in the telecom and network equipment industries, with diverse experience in product marketing, engineering, technology planning and business development.  Since joining MetaSwitch in 2004, he has been responsible for developing the company's IMS technology strategy and has also led key technology initiatives in hosted VoIP services, Web Services interfaces and Web portal evolution.

Martin's prior experience includes the role of founding CTO at CopperCom, where he was widely recognized as an early pioneer in Voice Over Broadband for his leadership of the ATM Forum standards work on Loop Emulation.  In previous roles at Madge Networks and at Marconi, he was instrumental in significant business successes in areas such as Token Ring switching and passive optical networking.

Martin is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, England with a degree in Engineering. He enjoys skiing, golf, fly fishing and fine wine.
